The 12-day Everest Base Camp Trek is one of the most incredible experiences for anyone looking to explore Nepal during their gap year. This trek takes you through stunning landscapes, traditional Sherpa villages, and offers breathtaking views of the world’s tallest mountain, Mount Everest. It’s an adventure that combines the thrill of trekking with the opportunity to immerse yourself in Nepal’s rich culture and natural beauty.
The journey begins in Kathmandu, where you can explore the city’s vibrant streets, temples, and markets before flying to Lukla, the starting point of your trek. From Lukla, you’ll trek to Phakding, a peaceful village along the Dudh Koshi River, and then make your way to Namche Bazaar, the Sherpa capital. Namche is a bustling hub where trekkers can relax, buy supplies, and enjoy stunning views of Everest, Lhotse, and other famous peaks.
During your trek, you’ll have acclimatization days in Namche and Dingboche, which help your body adjust to the high altitude. These days give you the chance to hike to viewpoints like the Everest View Hotel or Nangkartshang Peak, where you can get closer to the towering mountains. As you move higher, the landscapes become more rugged and dramatic, with Tengboche and Lobuche offering magnificent views of glaciers and snow-capped peaks.
On Day 9, the trek reaches its highlight—Everest Base Camp. Standing at the foot of Mount Everest is an unforgettable experience, a moment of accomplishment and awe. The trek continues with a hike to Kala Patthar, a famous viewpoint that provides the best panoramic views of Mount Everest and the surrounding Himalayan range.
After taking in the incredible scenery, you’ll trek back to Lukla to catch a flight back to Kathmandu, bringing your adventure to a close. The Everest Base Camp Trek is perfect for those on a gap year who want a physical challenge, a chance to experience new cultures, and see some of the world’s most beautiful landscapes. It’s not just about reaching Base Camp—it’s about the journey, the people you meet along the way, and the unforgettable memories you make.
If you're planning your gap year in Nepal, the Everest Base Camp trek should be on your list. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience that offers both adventure and personal growth.
EBC Trek Highlights
Your journey begins with an exhilarating early morning flight over the Himalayas to Lukla (2804m), where your adventure in the Everest region truly begins. The 30-minute flight offers stunning views of the mountains, and you’ll land at Tenzing and Hillary Airport, named after the famous first summiteers of Mount Everest, around 7 a.m.
Once you arrive in Lukla, take some time to explore the village. Grab a hot cup of tea, buy any last-minute gear like gloves and hats, and capture the moment with photos. Meanwhile, our trekking crew will get everything ready for the journey ahead, sorting and loading our trekking equipment.
With everything prepared, the trek officially begins! From Lukla, you’ll descend towards the Dudh Koshi River and join the main trail that leads to your first stop, the village of Phakding (2700m). The path is scenic and peaceful, and as you walk, you'll feel the excitement of starting your trek towards Mount Everest.
This day offers a perfect introduction to the region, with beautiful landscapes and a gentle start to your adventure. Whether you’re trekking for the first time or returning to the Himalayas, the sense of wonder and anticipation will make this a memorable experience.
Today, your trek takes you higher into the Himalayas, with the first climb of the day leading you across several thrilling wire suspension bridges. You'll cross around a dozen of these bridges as you follow the trail through the beautiful Sagarmatha National Park. (Sagarmatha is the Nepalese name for Mount Everest.)
The trail climbs steeply, but the effort is well worth it, as you'll be treated to stunning views of the surrounding peaks. As you gain elevation, the air becomes thinner, but the views become even more breathtaking. After a well-deserved lunch, you'll continue for about two more hours of hiking before reaching Namche Bazaar (3440m/11,286ft), a vibrant town often called the Sherpa capital and the Gateway to Everest.
Namche Bazaar is a bustling hub with everything you need. You'll find restaurants, lodges, shops, pharmacies, banks, and even delicious bakeries where you can indulge in some sweet treats. It's the perfect place to rest, enjoy local food, and pick up any gear or supplies you may need before continuing your trek.
This part of the trek is physically challenging, but the sense of accomplishment when you arrive at Namche, surrounded by the stunning Everest region, makes it all worth it. You'll feel a deep connection to the Sherpa culture and the spirit of adventure that draws trekkers from around the world to the Everest area.
Today is a crucial day for your trek as you focus on acclimatization—a key step in adjusting to the higher altitude. The goal is to “climb high, sleep low,” meaning you’ll hike up to a higher elevation during the day and then return to Namche Bazaar (3440m/11,286ft) to rest at night. This helps your body adapt to the thinning air in the Himalayas.
As part of your acclimatization process, you’ll take a short trek to the Everest View Hotel at 3880m/12,730ft, which offers the first incredible view of Mount Everest. From here, you’ll also see Ama Dablam, Lhotse, and Thamserku, all towering above the landscape. This is one of the most exciting moments of the trek, as the reality of being so close to the world’s highest peak starts to sink in.
You’ll spend a bit of time soaking in the views and visiting the Sherpa Museum to learn about the fascinating culture and customs of the Sherpa people, who are perfectly suited for life at high altitudes. Many trekkers choose to stay overnight in Namche to acclimatize, but today, you'll trek up and down the surrounding hills for 4 to 5 hours, getting the benefits of acclimatization while enjoying the stunning scenery.
By the end of the day, your body will begin to adjust to the thinner air, and you'll have had the chance to marvel at the Himalayan giants. The Everest region is truly a place of wonder, and the excitement of seeing Mount Everest for the first time is something you’ll never forget.
Today's trek takes you from Namche Bazaar (3440m/11,286ft) to Tengboche (3860m/12,664ft), a beautiful and peaceful village nestled in the heart of the Everest region. The hike takes about 5 to 6 hours, with a combination of ascents and descents.
You’ll begin by descending into the Dudh Koshi Valley, passing through lush pine forests and crossing several suspension bridges. As you walk, you'll be treated to stunning views of Mount Everest, Ama Dablam, and Lhotse. The landscape is breathtaking and calming, with the silence of the mountains enveloping you.
The final stretch takes you to Tengboche, home to the famous Tengboche Monastery. This spiritual site, with the towering mountains in the background, offers a deep sense of peace and accomplishment. After a rewarding day of trekking, you’ll be able to reflect on the beauty of the region and the significance of this place.
Today's trek takes you from Tengboche (3860m/12,664ft) to Dingboche (4410m/14,469ft), a beautiful village in the Everest region. The hike lasts about 5 to 6 hours, with a steady ascent through picturesque landscapes.
You’ll begin by descending through a beautiful pine forest before crossing the Dudh Koshi River. The trail then climbs gently, offering stunning views of Ama Dablam, Lhotse, and other towering peaks. As you ascend, you’ll pass through small villages like Pangboche (3900m/12,795ft), where you can experience the peaceful atmosphere of the Sherpa culture.
The final part of the trek takes you into the Imja Khola Valley, where Dingboche (4410m/14,469ft) awaits. This village is surrounded by spectacular views of Cholatse, Taboche, and the Lhotse and Pumori mountain ranges. The landscape becomes more rugged as you approach Dingboche, and the air becomes thinner, helping your body acclimatize to the higher altitude.
Arriving in Dingboche, you’ll feel the excitement of being deeper into the Everest region, with breathtaking mountain views surrounding you on all sides. This peaceful village is a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the majestic beauty of the Himalayas.
Today is an important acclimatization day in Dingboche (4410m/14,469ft), giving your body time to adjust to the higher altitude. The rule of thumb here is "climb high, sleep low," which means you’ll hike to a higher elevation but return to Dingboche to rest for the night.
For acclimatization, a popular and rewarding option is to hike up to Chukhung (4730m/15,518ft), a small village located in the Imja Khola Valley. This hike takes about 3 to 4 hours and offers amazing views of Ama Dablam, Island Peak, and the surrounding Himalayan peaks. The trail to Chukhung is gradual but steady, giving your body the chance to adjust to the altitude.
At Chukhung, you'll feel the thin air and the growing sense of remoteness, but the scenery is absolutely stunning. You’ll be surrounded by towering peaks and the breathtaking Chukhung Glacier, making it a perfect spot to take in the beauty of the Everest region. After spending some time here, you’ll return to Dingboche for the night.
This day helps your body acclimatize to the higher altitude before continuing further up towards Everest Base Camp. The peaceful surroundings of Dingboche and Chukhung make it a perfect place for reflection and rest.
Today's trek takes you from Dingboche (4410m/14,469ft) to Lobuche (4940m/16,210ft), a challenging ascent that will push you closer to the Everest Base Camp. The hike takes about 5 to 6 hours, with a steady climb through rocky terrain and alpine landscapes.
You begin by leaving the peaceful village of Dingboche and following the trail towards the Khumbu Glacier. The first section of the trek is relatively gradual, as you pass through Pangboche (3900m/12,795ft) and the Tibetan Buddhist stupa, before making a steady climb toward Dughla (4620m/15,157ft). From here, the trail becomes steeper, leading you to the Khumbu Glacier moraine.
As you climb higher, you’ll begin to feel the thinning air, but the views are absolutely worth the effort. Along the way, you’ll be rewarded with incredible vistas of the Himalayas, including Pumori, Nuptse, and Cholatse, as well as views of Everest in the distance. The rugged beauty of the Khumbu and the silence of the glacier create a truly mesmerizing atmosphere.
Finally, after a few more hours of trekking, you’ll reach Lobuche (4940m/16,210ft). This small, isolated village offers spectacular views of Everest, Lhotse, and the surrounding peaks. It’s a perfect place to rest and reflect on the incredible journey you’ve made so far.
Today's trek takes you from Lobuche (4940m/16,210ft) to Gorakshep (5160m/16,929ft) and then up to Kala Patthar(5643m/18,513ft), one of the best viewpoints in the Everest region. The hike will take about 7 to 8 hours in total.
Lobuche to Gorakshep (5160m/16,929ft)
The trek from Lobuche to Gorakshep takes about 3 to 4 hours. You’ll walk along the Khumbu Glacier, with amazing views of Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse. As you get closer to Gorakshep, the altitude makes it more challenging, but the landscape is stunning.
Gorakshep to Kala Patthar (5643m/18,513ft)
After a short rest in Gorakshep, you’ll trek to Kala Patthar for the ultimate Everest view. The 2 to 3-hour climb is steep and tough due to the altitude, but once at the top, you'll be rewarded with a panoramic view of Mount Everest, Lhotse, and many other towering peaks.
After soaking in the views, descend back to Gorakshep for the night or to continue toward Everest Base Camp.
Today is a huge day on your Everest trek! You will start by reaching Everest Base Camp (5364m/17,598ft), the ultimate goal for many trekkers, then descend to Pheriche (4240m/13,910ft) to rest.

Trekking to Everest Base Camp (EBC) is a dream for many adventurers. The Everest region offers some of the most stunning views in the world, and reaching EBC is a major achievement. But, while trekking to the base of Mount Everest is exciting, there are risks involved, and altitude sickness is one of the most common challenges.
At Gap Year Nepal, we want to help you have a safe and unforgettable adventure. This guide will explain the altitude sickness risks on the Everest trek, how to recognize the symptoms, and most importantly, how to prevent it so you can enjoy the trek without worries.
Altitude sickness, or Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), happens when you ascend to high altitudes too quickly. As you climb higher, the air gets thinner, and your body needs time to adjust to the lower oxygen levels.
The Everest trek takes you to very high altitudes—Everest Base Camp (EBC) is at 5,364 meters (17,598 feet). Trekking to places like Kala Patthar (5,643 meters / 18,517 feet) means you're climbing even higher. If you don’t give your body time to adjust, AMS can occur, which makes your trek dangerous if not managed properly.
Trekking in the Everest region is challenging because of its high altitude. Here’s why it can be hard for your body to adjust:
If you’re trekking to Everest Base Camp or Kala Patthar, it’s important to know the symptoms of altitude sickness. Catching the signs early can help prevent it from getting worse.
These are serious conditions that require immediate action:
If you experience severe symptoms, you need to descend immediately to a lower altitude and seek medical help right away.
It’s possible to reduce the risk of altitude sickness by taking a few simple steps. Here are the best tips to keep you safe on the EBC trek:
Avoid Smoking and Alcohol: Both can make it harder for your body to adjust to the altitude. Stay healthy and focused by avoiding these.
If you start feeling the symptoms of altitude sickness, don’t ignore it. Here’s what you should do:
Trekking to Everest Base Camp is an incredible experience, but the Everest region can be challenging. By taking precautions against altitude sickness, you can make sure your trek is safe and enjoyable.
At Gap Year Nepal, we are here to guide you through the entire process, from preparing for your trek to ensuring your safety along the way. We work with the best trekking companies in Nepal to offer you expert guides, comfortable accommodations, and an itinerary designed to help you acclimatize properly.
Whether you’re planning the ultimate gap year experience in Nepal or simply want to trek to EBC, we’re here to make your adventure unforgettable. Safe travels, and we can’t wait to see you on the trail!
Namaste! Dear one This trip has been the dream that I have been planning for a long time. I always wanted to contribute from the professional perspective while also immerging myself in the culture and nature of this unique region. Since childhood my goal has been to train as a doctor to help others. As I progressed through my studies my desire to heal the sick without expecting anything in turn, along with a deeper understanding of society and needs. The love for nature is a universal thing human instinct, and I am no exception. Visiting the mountains of Nepal, one of the world's most inspiring place. Amond the tallest peak the landscapes seem to touch the soul of those who experience this. In conclusion, this journey has been truly unique term. Every place in the world offers beautiful memories but in Nepal, I discovered a different kind of mystery. Its culture so different from my own religion and society left me with lots of memories.
Namaste! I am very grateful and I felt so lucky to for living this experience. I have known Nepal really. your culture, your food your way of living and it’s been only two weeks a very short period but I will come back for sure. And I must say that everybody has treated me so kindly, so good, specially of course in this house and hospital. Thanks, a lot to Sushi, Prakash, Shreejaya (and sorry if I had not written your names properly..) and of course to Didi who has always been so kind and generous. Thank you so much.
Namaste! My departure is approaching only a few hours left to spend in Nepal and what can I say about this experience! When I decided this internship in Nepal, I was both excited and stressed by the unknown of a country more than 7000 km from home. But this stress quickly dissipated when I arrived in Nepal and met the wonderful people who are the vol Nepal volunteers. During my 12 week placement I had an incredible experience I met some lovely people and discovered another culture completely different from my own. Whether it was the humain experience the project in Rolpa and the cultural discovery I can say without a doubt that it was the least thing of my life! For all days spent by your side I would like to thank all the volunteers from vol Nepal and Himalayan circuit as well as Didi for welcoming me and guiding us through the period.
Namaste! I would like to thank the entire VolNepal team for these incredible moments that I was able to spend in Nepal, Thanks to you. Whether in Kathmandu as in Rolpa district you embraced me as if I were one of your own, and that really touched me. I leave with a head full of memories and shared moments that will remain engraved for a long time. I am proud of the project we carried out for the Rolpa district school. Knowing that what we have put in place will be useful to children makes me really happy. It’s a useful and complete project, and I am happy to have contributed to it. Thank you again for your support your smiles and everything you have taught me. I already and everything you have taught me. I already know that I will return to Nepal one day, and it will be a great celebration thanks to you!
Namaste My 5-week internship went by extremely quickly. This tip was my first experience being so far from home and I won’t forget it. First of all, upon my arrival the country completely took me out of my French comfort zone. The local culture, landscape, and places to explore are incredible and I wish I could have stayed longer to see everything. The monastery project was cool and different from my usual concrete project of my job at France. The team on site is amazing, guiding us and always ready to help us without request. Also thank you for organizing the two trip to Chitwan and Pokhara which will be unforgettable. I also want to thanks Didi for all the delicious meals she prepared for us and for her kindness. If I had the chance to do it all over again, I would do it without hesitation. Thank you for everything or I would rather say in Nepalese Dhanyabaad.
Namaste! Its been already nearly 2 months since I arrived here in Nepal and finally the time has come to day goodbye. The first 3 weeks of volunteering in the monastery were amazing the joy I felt like every day is something I had never experienced in my life. I would like to think Sushil, Nisha, and specially Didi for taking care of me and making my time in the house like I was at home. Also, I am so grateful to have been able to meet the other volunteers and all the good moments we were able to share together. After that the treks I did were a childhood dream came true. Thank you for all your work organizing everything and for bring always available for any question I might have, you really made me have the greatest time of mt life up there in the mountains. Dhanyabaad!
Namaste! During these 12 weeks of internship, I had the most enriching experience of my life. Whether in terms of meeting new people, working, visiting or traveling Nepal exceed all my exceptions. I will never forget it! At the very beginning, this internship was challenging for me because it took me out of my comfort zone and stripped away all my familiar reference point. Thanks to the volunteer and the staff, I was able to overcome this and make the most of my Nepalese experience perfect. I would like to sincerely thank Didi. For welcoming us and feeding is with great kindness during this entire period. I also want to thank VolNepal and GapYearNepal for the warm welcome the exchange we had and the trips they proposed. Dhanyabaad!
Namaste! I can only say thank you, thank you for your time, the experience and thank you for this opportunity. Nepal has been one of the best things we have ever had in our life. I have met wonderful people I have been able to learn and participate in the culture of here and above all I have been able to be part of a wonderful family which has treated me like one more daughter. I will never forget this adventure. Nepal its people and the people and the family I have lived with will be always be in my heart and I will always be grateful to them.
After more than 15 days in this country and this house specifically, we can only say thank you. At first it was difficult for us, because we were separated from our parents by so many kilometers and also because of the culture shock. But as we started volunteering, we realized that we were having the opportunity to live a wonderful experience. Thank you first of all to the most family for their welcoming, love and flexibility with us. Also thank the agency that helped us from Spain, you social and our supporters here in Nepal, sui and Nisha. Finally, we would like to thank the school and the hospital that have made it easier for us to stay here and have let us be part of their projects. Muchos gracias!
Namaste! These past three weeks have been a blast. This experience has been a great one and we will not forget this! A special thanks to Didi for providing us with good food every day, to Nisha for the traditional dresses, and to dual for the company the first three days of volunteering. We want to say the biggest thanks to the French guys, with whom we have shared this experience for always making us feel safe and comfortable! Thank you!
